It was a brilliant day at the NHF Governance Conference 2019. It is always a pleasure to catch up with clients in the sector. Here are our key messages from the event:
Don’t wait for the outcome of the Green Paper – if you can see improvements for your governance and better ways of working then “do it”.
Quality of data is crucial, as is ensuring that your Board is getting the right data so that they can make informed decisions.
Health and Safety is imperative along with the protection of tenancies. On a practical level, we are seeing a big increase in RPs looking for health and safety related advice, including reviewing leases to establish responsibility for fire doors, whether sprinklers can be fitted etc.
Repairs and maintenance services are more than just an residual part of an RPs business and need to be efficient and effective.
Tenant engagement is incredibly important – how are you listening and engaging with your tenants and their needs? What about shared owners and vulnerable residents (such as those in supported housing) - how are you ensuring that their voices are heard?
Continue to be open and transparent with the regulator – especially of course with VfM metrics and be honest about where there is a need for improvement.
Diversity is essential for a successful board and improves board room behaviours. Look for people who challenge and ask questions.
Encourage the younger generation to be involved in governance – the benefits to your organisation can be substantial.
Remember one size doesn’t fit all – how will your organisation’s governance thrive?
As ever sharing success stories and learning curves was one of the things that delegates got the most out of and its always a pleasure for us to catch up with our clients and colleagues in the housing sector. Please do get in touch with us if you would like to discuss any of these issues in more details - we are always happy to have a chat.
